We are excited to welcome three new graduate students to our research group this fall: Shane Hancox, Camila Sancho, and Katarzyna (Zyna) Wisnauckas.
Shane Hancox joins the group as a Ph.D. student in Environmental and Water Resources Engineering at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Shane’s research focuses on the degradation of emerging contaminants, including PFAS, using advanced electrochemical processes. Before beginning his Ph.D., he worked as a Scientist at Sublime Systems, contributing to technologies aimed at decarbonizing cement production. Shane previously earned his M.S. in Environmental and Water Resources Engineering from UMass Amherst in 2024, where his work focused on the synthesis and application of mixed metal oxide electrodes for advanced oxidation in water and wastewater treatment. Originally from Massachusetts’ North Shore, Shane enjoys mountain biking, chess, and participating in the UMass Engineers Without Borders chapter, which partners with communities worldwide to implement sustainable water resource projects.
Camila Sancho joins as an M.S./Ph.D. student in Environmental and Water Resources Engineering at UMass Amherst. She is passionate about improving access to safe drinking water, particularly in remote communities. Camila earned her bachelor’s degree in Chemical and Biological Engineering at the University of British Columbia and hopes to contribute to the development of novel electrochemical processes and materials for drinking water treatment technologies. She has also worked with the NGO WATERisLIFE in Costa Rica, Kenya, and Ghana, helping implement solutions to address drinking water needs. Originally from Costa Rica, Camila enjoys spending time in nature, exploring new places and cultures, and trying new sports.
Katarzyna (Zyna) Wisnauckas joins the group as a Master’s student in the Environmental and Water Resources Engineering track within Civil Engineering at UMass Amherst. Her research will focus on PFAS transport in and around the nearby Mill River. Zyna graduated in May 2025 from Smith College with a B.S. in Engineering Science (Environmental Concentration) and a minor in Landscape Studies. Born and raised in Western Massachusetts, she enjoys live music, Nordic skiing, and coaching Nordic skiing and lacrosse.
